The New and Improved City of High Point

The city of High Point has done some re-vamping over the past few years.

From bars to restaurants, the city is slowly becoming more popular for both townies and for High Point University students.

This fall, a new bar opened up in downtown High Point across from the Rockers' Stadium called The Dive Bar.

It has become increasingly popular with college students because of the fun arcade games and affordable drinks and snacks, as well as having quick service and ample seating.

But, The Dive Bar isn't the only bar in town. High Point students and townies have been going to Blue Bourbon Jack's (BBJ's) and 1614 (previously known as After Hours). Another popular bar that gets a lot of student action is The Deck, which is located 10 minutes outside of the city, in Jamestown.

A new wine bar has opened up, called Nomad, so if beer from Brown Truck Brewery isn't to your liking, then the variety of different wines from Nomad just might be.

Right across the street from The Dive Bar and located right next to the Rockers Stadium is Stock and Grain, a new restaurant outlet. In the big factory-like building, there are nine different food options, with more to come.

There is Beverly, which is a craft beer bar, Biscuits, Brisket and Beer, Cahoots, which is their outside patio area where people can drink cocktails and listen to live music, Damn Good Burgers and Dogs, Harvest Boards and Bowls, Message Coffee, Pieson Pizza and Co, Pop's Mini Doughnut Shop and Yumi Sushi.

Each business is independently owned and there are a variety of different kinds of options to choose from.

But, as the city is getting all these new food options, it's important that we don't forget the options that we already have.

Blue Rock Pizza and Tap has been a staple for those living in the High Point area. In fact, the owners of Blue Rock are also the owners of BBJ's and Magnolia Blue, which is a fancier restaurant that serves eclectic southern food.

There are even several small coffee / breakfast businesses, like 83 Custom Coffee, Krispy Kreme and Granny's Donuts, as well as a crepe shop called The Penny Path.

On downtownhighpoint.org, there is a calendar where you can see different events that are being hosted in the downtown area like plays and movies.

There is a map of the city and locations for all dining options, which range from Mexican to Italian as well as all the addresses for the shops.

The city is changing, and for the better. The crime rate is going down and people are beginning to feel just a little bit safer in the city.

With all these new shops opening, it's giving people more of an excuse to head downtown and immerse with the community.

As long as we can keep our streets safe and keep giving students and townies an excuse to go downtown and interact with the small businesses and chain restaurants, the city will keep moving on an upward trajectory.
